Planning a building?

What to Think About Early

  • ✓How far the building is from your panel or meter pole
  • ✓What tools and equipment you'll run (welder, compressor, lift, A/C)
  • ✓How much lighting you want inside and out
  • ✓Whether you'll want an RV outlet, water well or gate opener
  • ✓Whether it needs its own meter or a feeder from the house

Good to know

  • A load calculation is included for any motor or single load of 30 amps or more.
  • Per-foot trenching prices assume normal soil. Rock, boring under driveways and lawn repair cost extra.
  • Shops and barns usually need GFCI protection on outlets.
  • After a utility outage, check that three-phase or large motors turn the right way before running them.

Questions

Shop & Barn Wiring FAQ

Do I need a separate meter for my shop?

Not always. Many shops run on a feeder and subpanel from the house. A separate meter can make sense for far-off buildings. We'll go over both.

Can you wire a welder or air compressor?

Yes. We size a dedicated 240-volt circuit from the equipment's nameplate.

How deep does the underground line go?

Code sets the depth by the wiring method. We trench and install to code depth.

Can you add power for an RV?

Yes, 30- or 50-amp RV outlets, at your shop, barn or a meter pole.
