How it works

Protection at the Panel

A whole-home surge protector mounts at your main panel and limits surges coming in on the service before they spread through the house.

Panel-mounted protector

Installed in an open breaker space or beside the panel.

Required on service upgrades

Code requires a surge protector when a home's service is replaced or upgraded.

Layered protection

Pair it with plug-in surge strips at TVs, computers and other electronics.

Good grounding

Surge protection depends on good grounding. We check what we can see while we're there.

Worth a look if

Who Should Consider It

  • ✓You've lost appliances or electronics to a storm or surge
  • ✓You have new HVAC, a heat pump, or high-end appliances
  • ✓You're on a rural line with frequent outages and flickers
  • ✓You're upgrading your panel or service anyway
  • ✓You have a standby generator or EV charger

What it can and can't do

  • Surge protectors reduce risk. No device prevents all damage, especially from a direct lightning strike.
  • Lightning protection systems (rods on the roof) are a separate system.
  • Power quality and outages are controlled by your utility, not by us.
  • When we install it during panel or service work, it costs less than as a separate trip.

Questions

Surge Protection FAQ

Will a whole-home surge protector protect against lightning?

It reduces risk from surges, including some lightning-related surges, but no device prevents all damage from a direct strike.

Do I still need surge strips?

Yes, for sensitive electronics. Whole-home and plug-in protection work together.

Is it required?

Code requires one when a home's service is replaced or upgraded. Otherwise it's recommended, not required.

How long does it last?

Surge protectors wear with each surge they absorb. Many have an indicator light that shows when they need replacing.
