Do You Actually Need a Whole-Home Standby Generator?

You need a whole-home standby generator if losing power for several days would put your family, your home, or your health at real risk — not just inconvenience you for an evening. A portable generator can bridge a short outage, but it comes with real limitations a standby unit doesn't have.

The biggest one is safety. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, carbon monoxide poisoning from portable generators kills an estimated 100 people nationwide every year. Roughly 81% of those deaths happen at home, most often because the generator was running too close to a window, door, or attached garage during a power outage. A whole-home standby unit is installed and vented outdoors by a licensed electrician according to code, which removes that specific risk entirely.

On natural gas, a standby generator runs for as long as the utility's gas supply holds — effectively indefinitely, unless the outage itself damaged the line. On propane, runtime depends on tank size and how hard the generator is working: a 500-gallon tank typically buys somewhere around a week at moderate load, less if you're running the whole house hard through a Texas August. If multi-day outages are your real concern, size the tank with that in mind, not the minimum.

Why Can't You Just Plug a Generator Into Your Panel?

You can't connect a generator directly to your home's wiring without a transfer switch or interlock device, because the National Electrical Code requires one to prevent your generator and the utility's power from ever being connected to the same circuit at the same time.

This isn't a technicality — it's a serious safety requirement. Without a transfer switch, a generator can backfeed electricity out through your meter and into the utility's lines, which can injure or kill a lineworker who assumes those lines are dead while restoring power to your street. A licensed electrician installs the transfer switch as part of any standby generator install, and it's also required for a portable unit if you want to connect it to your home's circuits rather than running extension cords.

Do You Need a Permit to Install a Standby Generator in Your County?

In most cases, yes — but exactly what's required depends on whether you're inside city limits. Many of the rural, unincorporated parts of Wharton, Jackson, Lavaca, Matagorda, and Colorado counties don't enforce a residential building permit for a generator install, though the electrical work still has to be done by a TDLR-licensed electrician and still has to meet code. Incorporated cities in the service area typically require an electrical permit for the transfer switch, plus a gas permit if you're running natural gas or propane.

Two recent changes are worth knowing about. First, Texas Senate Bills 1202 and 1252, effective September 1, 2025, now let a qualified third party — including a licensed master electrician — handle plan review and inspection for a home backup power system directly. The local authority is then required to sign off within a few business days of getting that review. Second, if you're in a subdivision with a homeowners' association, Texas Property Code §202.019 prohibits the HOA from banning a permanently installed standby generator outright, as long as it's rated 7 kW or more. The HOA can still set reasonable rules about where it's placed or how it's screened from view.

Because permit rules vary by city and can change, don't assume your neighbor's experience applies to your address. When you talk to an electrician about your project, ask specifically which permits your installation will require — it's a legitimate part of that conversation, not a detail to skip.

Will a Standby Generator Bother My Neighbors?

In most cases, less than you'd think — and in the rural parts of the service area, there may be no generator-specific noise rule at all. Texas counties don't have general authority to regulate noise in unincorporated areas, so outside city limits in Wharton, Jackson, Lavaca, Matagorda, or Colorado County, the main limit is the state's general disorderly conduct statute, which only applies above 85 decibels and after a warning. Inside city limits, most Texas noise ordinances cap residential noise in a range roughly comparable to a running dishwasher. A modern standby generator can land right around that line, which is exactly why placement and any HOA screening requirements matter — not just whether you're allowed to have one at all.

When Should You Schedule Your Generator Installation Before Hurricane Season?

Ideally, months before you think you'll need it. In a normal season, a signed contract typically becomes a fully operational system in 2 to 3 weeks. Once an active storm or hurricane hits, that timeline can stretch dramatically for two real reasons. Generators and the parts needed to install them become scarce almost overnight as regional demand spikes. And electricians — including us — are typically tied up on emergency power restoration work for existing customers rather than new installations.

That's the real reason “call in spring” beats “call when the forecast turns purple.” It's not one bottleneck, it's two: a run on equipment, and a crew that's busy keeping the lights on for the people who already lost power.

NOAA's August 2026 outlook puts this year's Atlantic hurricane season at a 75% chance of being below-normal, largely because of El Niño conditions that tend to suppress storm formation. That's genuinely good news, but it's not a reason to wait. Hurricane Beryl made landfall in July 2024 as only a Category 1 storm — one of the weaker hurricane classifications — and it still knocked out power to more than 2.6 million Texas customers, some for over a week in the middle of summer. A below-normal season still only needs one storm to matter to your street.

Will a Standby Generator Lower Your Homeowners Insurance Premium?

Possibly, but it's not universal, so check with your specific carrier before counting on it. A small number of insurers — including Chubb and Amica — do offer a documented premium credit, generally cited around 5% and documented as high as 10% with Amica, but only for a permanently installed, automatic standby generator. Many major carriers don't publicly offer this discount at all, so the only way to know for certain is to call your agent and ask directly. This is separate from any windstorm or wind-mitigation coverage your policy may have, which is worth a separate conversation with your carrier.
