100 vs 200 Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade | El Campo, TX

If your home in El Campo, Wharton, Fort Bend, Jackson, Victoria, Lavaca, Matagorda, or Colorado County still runs on a 60-amp or 100-amp electrical panel, you're not alone — and you're not necessarily in danger. But between EV chargers, heat pumps, and a couple of decades-old panel brands with real fire-safety histories, "do I actually need a panel upgrade" is one of the most common questions we get. Here's how to answer it for your home specifically, not just guess.

How Many Amps Does Your Home Actually Need?

Most modern homes are built with 150 to 200 amp service, and if you have — or plan to add — central air conditioning, an EV charger, an electric range, or another major electric load, 200 amps is typically the safer, more future-proof choice.

The National Electrical Code sets 100 amps as the legal minimum service size for a one-family dwelling. That's a floor, not a target. A lot of homes in this area, especially anything built before the 1980s, still run on a 60-amp fuse box or a bare-minimum 100-amp panel that was perfectly fine decades ago but gets stretched thin by how much electricity a modern household actually uses.

Do You Have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco Panel?

If your panel is labeled Federal Pacific, FPE, Stab-Lok, Zinsco, GTE-Sylvania, or Sylvania, it's worth having a licensed electrician take a look soon. These aren't rare or theoretical — we've replaced hundreds of Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels across El Campo and the surrounding counties, and we still see them regularly in older homes out here. That includes homes from Wharton and Rosenberg to Victoria and Hallettsville. Both brands have a well-documented history of breakers that fail to trip when they should, and both have become a real factor in whether you can get or keep homeowners insurance.

You'll often see these panels called "recalled" online — that's not quite accurate, and it's worth getting right. The Consumer Product Safety Commission investigated Federal Pacific breakers in the early 1980s and closed the case without issuing a formal recall, citing budget limitations rather than clearing the product as safe. Independent testing overseen by materials scientist Dr. Jesse Aronstein during the CPSC's original investigation found that Federal Pacific Stab-Lok double-pole breakers failed to trip in roughly 51 percent of tests. That rate climbed to about 65 percent once a breaker had been switched on and off 500 times — a rough proxy for years of normal use. Zinsco panels have a similar problem from a different cause: their aluminum bus bars can corrode over time, and a breaker can fuse itself in the "off" position while the circuit stays energized.

The more immediate issue for a lot of homeowners is insurance, not just safety. One insurance agency network reports that 24 of its 26 carriers won't insure a home with a Federal Pacific panel at all. If you're buying, selling, or renewing coverage on a home with one of these, expect it to come up.

You can usually tell from the outside of the panel without opening it. Federal Pacific panels are typically labeled "Federal Pacific," "FPE," or "Stab-Lok," often with red-striped breakers. Zinsco panels often show colorful breaker handles — blue, red, green, yellow — and a "Zinsco," "GTE-Sylvania," or "Magnatrip" label. If you see either, don't open the panel yourself. Have it evaluated.

Will a Federal Pacific or Zinsco Panel Affect Selling or Financing My Home?

Yes, on both sides of the transaction. If you're buying with an FHA, VA, or USDA-backed loan, the appraiser checks more than market value — those loan programs have Minimum Property Requirements, and an outdated or damaged electrical panel is specifically the kind of thing that can get flagged and hold up closing until it's fixed.

If you're selling, Texas law requires you to disclose known material defects — including electrical issues — on the standard TREC Seller's Disclosure Notice, under Texas Property Code §5.008. A Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel you know about is exactly the kind of thing that belongs on that form. Skipping it isn't a shortcut: Texas buyers who find out later can pursue damages under the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, which allows up to three times the actual damages plus attorney's fees.

Either way, replacing the panel before you list or before you close removes the issue instead of just disclosing or negotiating around it.

What Does the Code Actually Require for a Panel Upgrade?

A one-family home's electrical service has to be at least 100 amps under the National Electrical Code — the legal floor, not a recommendation. Texas has adopted the 2026 edition of that code, effective September 1, 2026, following the 2020 and 2023 editions before it.

One requirement that surprises a lot of homeowners: replacing your panel now legally requires a whole-home surge protective device as part of the job, under NEC Article 230.67. That's true whether your old panel had one or not — the code applies to the new work, not just to new construction.

As for your existing wiring: if it was legal when it was installed, it's generally allowed to stay in place — "grandfathered in" — even after the code changes around it. That protection doesn't extend to new work on that circuit, though, and it never excuses wiring that's actually become unsafe, regardless of when it went in.

Is a Smart Panel a Substitute for a Panel Upgrade?

Sometimes, but not always. A smart panel or smart breaker adds real-time circuit monitoring and remote control, and in some cases it can manage your existing capacity well enough to add something like an EV charger without a full service upgrade. It's not a fix, though, for a panel that's genuinely undersized for your home, or a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel that needs to come out entirely.

On cost: a full smart panel replacement typically runs $2,550 to $4,100 for the unit itself, with installed cost usually landing between $5,000 and $8,500. A retrofit add-on that works alongside your existing panel rather than replacing it is cheaper, generally $3,000 to $5,500. What About Subpanels and Overwired Panels?

A subpanel is a secondary breaker panel fed from your main panel, and it's the right call when you need more circuit capacity in one specific area — a garage, workshop, addition, or detached structure — without running everything back through the main panel.

An overwired panel is a different, more urgent problem: more wires crammed into a single breaker or lug than it's rated to hold. It's a code violation, and it creates real overheating risk. If an electrician tells you your panel is overwired, that's not a "maybe someday" — it needs attention.

How Much Does a Panel Upgrade Cost, and How Long Does It Take?

A straightforward panel replacement on its own typically runs $1,500 to $3,500, with the lower end reflecting a smaller 100-amp panel with fewer breakers and the higher end reflecting a larger panel or more circuits. If your service also needs a meter loop replacement — common on older homes — that adds roughly $1,800 to $2,800 on top. The exact number depends on the scope: a meter mounted directly on the house or replaced on an existing pole runs toward the lower end, while setting a brand-new pole adds more. A full whole-home rewire is a bigger project, running anywhere from a few days for a smaller home to a couple of weeks for a larger or more complex one.
